“The best day of the year” is the description one happy attendee gives Wyatt Heritage Properties/Culture Summerside’s Olde Fashioned Carnival. Hundreds of others would no doubt agree.
On carnival day the lawns of the beautiful Wyatt Heritage Properties, located at the corner of Granville and Prince Streets in Summerside, will be transformed into the site of a Victorian style carnival that is a community celebration for one and all. There is plenty in which to partake.
Volunteer barkers invite participants to play over fifteen olde style carnival games for five cents a try. Winners of a game will pocket a small Canadian pin and when they have a sufficient number they can exchange them for neat prizes at the prize table.
The miniature horse ride is also five cents, as is the face painting. But it will cost ten cents to enter the Tea Tent for a cup of freshly brewed tea served in a china cup along with a piece of Canada Day Birthday Cake. An additional ten cents can secure a brief and light-hearted tea leaf reading.
Rosco the Clown, the juggler, the arm wrestler, the Strong Man, and the street performer will all give an excellent show. Plan to play tug of war, listen to a story in the reading tent, spend time at the petting farm, and watch the blacksmith at work.
Fred Martin, Kevin Arthur, and Jason Campbell will be entertaining on the outdoor stage.
When the smell of the carnival food creates a craving, join the line-up for barbequed hot dogs, popcorn, and cotton candy, and pay a visit to the candy store.
When a break is needed simply sit in the shade of century old trees and soak in the beauty of the Victorian Lefurgey Cultural Centre, the Wyatt House Museum, and the MacNaught History Centre and Archives, gifted to the City of Summerside by the late Wanda Wyatt to serve as the cornerstone of arts, heritage, and cultural activities in the city.
The Olde Fashioned Carnival kicks off summer, the end of the school year, the anticipated Canada Day holiday, and welcomes visitors to Summerside. It is the event in which to chat with old friends and make new ones. It is the event that makes life long memories.
